Tristan Anderson is a young American from Oakland, California, fighting for his life 5000 miles away in a hospital in Tel Aviv after being shot in the face by an Israeli soldier. His parents and girlfriend are holding hope and a vigil at his bedside. Tristan–38 years old was shot directly by a high-velocity tear gas canister fired by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) on March 13th while peacefully protesting in the Palestinian village of Bi’ilin against the “separation wall” deemed illegal by the International Court of Justice. The wall, longer and taller than the Berlin wall, zigzags into Palestinian lands, preventing villagers from reaching their farms, hospitals, and schools. According to Jonathan Pollock, an Israeli peace activist, Tristan was shot at the end of the protest and was not involved in “clashes” with the soldiers or in a closed military zone. IOF has a history of targeting medics, children, journalists, and peace activists, as recently admitted by Israeli soldiers. When medics were tending to Tristan, IOF fired more canisters on clearly marked medics. A Palestinian ambulance carrying Tristan was delayed at the Israeli check point while Tristan was bleeding heavily. Another delay came while waiting for an Israeli ambulance, as Palestinian ones are not allowed into Israel. Tristan has gone through three surgical operations on his brain and that part of his brain was removed. He is still in a comma and his life will never be the same again even if he survives. Meanwhile in the USA, there were no reports of even the slightest outrage expressed by politicians, newspaper editors, talk show hosts or mass media outlets. Tristan Anderson was injured in the line of moral duty. His rare courage is inspirational, and, just like Rachel Corrie six years ago, was someone willing to sacrifice his life for justice. He will not be rewarded the Presidential Medal of Honor but has all our respect and prayers.
